Instructions to Install latest Oracle Drivers
Note: You will need the Developer Tools installed and administrative privileges for your computer to complete these instructions. If you have installed Oracle Server, there is no need to follow these steps, as the client library is already installed.

These instructions supersede those provided by Oracle. The Oracle installation instructions were not written with OS X in mind, so we are providing you with these simple steps to get Oracle's drivers installed in an OS X friendly way.

  1. Go to http://otn.oracle.com/software/content.html and click on the Oracle SQLJ Translator link from within the Technologies, Utilities, and Drivers section.
  2. This will bring you to a login window, if you do not already have an OTN account, sign up for one for free.
  3. Once logged in, click on the Oracle8i OCI driver for Mac OS X link.
  4. Complete the license agreement and then download the Oracle 8i v8.1.7.1 OCI / Mac OS X driver to your desktop.
  5. Control-click on this link and save the install-oracle file to the same location that you saved the MacOSX_8171.cpio file you downloaded from Oracles website.
  6. Open up a terminal window (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal) and type in the following command at the prompt then press return:
    cd ~/Desktop
  7. Type in the following command at the prompt then press return:
    chmod a+x install-oracle; ./install-oracle
  8. You will be prompted for your OS X admin password, enter your password and press return.
  9. You may now delete both files that you downloaded.
  10. Note: if you are using an Intel-based Mac, you will need to run MacSQL via Rosetta to connect to Oracle (as the Oracle driver isn't Universal. To do this, select MacSQL in the Finder and choose Get Info from the File menu. Then check the box labeled Open using Rosetta.
