To open a new connection, select New Connection from the File menu. You will be presented with the dialog shown below.
The new connection dialog box consists of the following elements:
| Database Type: | Menu offering the types of database plugins currently installed and loaded. The default selection can be specified in Preferences. | |

| Host: | For most databases, you enter the host name or ip address of the database
server. If you are connecting to a database on your local computer, enter
localhost. |

| Port: | Enter the port number to connect to. Normally you can leave this set to the default port number. | |
| Userid: | The userid/login to use for the database connection. | |
| Password: | The password that matches with the Userid being used. If no password is required, leave blank. | |
| Database: | This field's purpose and name can change depending on which type of database you are connect to. See the appropriate chapter on the database type you are connecting to for details on what to enter in this field. |
